The Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) legislation has been challenged in the Supreme Court under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution of Pakistan.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, Advocate Saleem Ullah Khan on Wednesday filed a constitutional petition in the court and appeal to repeal the new amendments in the election laws.
In the petition, it is stated that at the November 17 sitting of the joint parliament, 33 bills have been passed without any debate that is unconstitutional.
The petition also termed the amendment in the election laws for use of EVMs in the next general elections as a malicious step from the government to open the door to fraud in the country.
It is also stated in the petition that the ruling party would get benefit from the EVM as well as the said amendment had reduced the powers of the Election Commission that is also unconstitutional.
In the petition, the legislation related to giving the right to vote to overseas Pakistanis was also highlighted and said that the amendment did not specify the powers of overseas to vote.
The petitioner, with a demand of EVM legislation to be declared null and void, has made the federal government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary parties in his constitutional petition.
