In a heartbreaking incident in Daska, an empty-handed widow ended her life due to mounting pressure from unpaid electricity and gas bills, 24NewsHD TV Channel reported on Tuesday.
According to the details, after struggling to pay a gas bill of 16,000 rupees and an additional electricity bill of 9,000 rupees, a widow named Razia, overwhelmed by the financial burden, committed suicide.
The family members said officials from the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GAPCO) had been threatening her with disconnection over non-payment.
On Monday, when the GAPCO officials came to remove the electricity metre from her home, the widow consumed pesticide pills stored in the wheat to end her life.
Razia, who supported her family by operating a grain-roasting furnace, was already under immense pressure due to her three sons being unemployed.
The poor widow and her children were living in a run-down, three-room house without basic appliances such as a bulb, fan, motor, or refrigerator.
The local police have shifted her body to the civil hospital and have initiated legal proceedings, while residents expressed their anger over the high utility bills and inflation that pushed Razia to this fatal decision.
