A man in district Gujrat, who runs a medical store to earn a living, received a shock when the WAPDA sent him an electricity bill of Rs1435283, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

On seeing the inflated bill, Faraz, a resident of Kunjah area, who owns a medical store in a neighbouring town of Mangowal, got depressed.

It is pertinent to mention here that taking notice of people’s complaints about overbilling, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, over a week ago, had ordered an investigation to identify those officials in power distribution companies who are responsible for sending inflated electricity bills to consumers.

The minister made it clear that there would be zero tolerance for overbilling.

He said that last year the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) had charged people 830 extra units, regretting that Lesco overbilled even the consumers using just 300 units.

On the instructions of the minister, special teams, consisting of officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Anti-Corruption Wing, were formed.

Now the FIA officers will not only keep an eye on overbilling but will also see to it that incidents of electricity theft do not take place.
