Barrister Shahzad Ata Elahi has confirmed that he has resigned from the post of attorney general of Pakistan but denied reports that a top government personality tried to stop him from stepping down, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.

Barrister Shahzad Ata Elahi described such reports as “baseless and not right”, saying nobody asked him to quit.

“I signed my resignation and handed over to a senior minister. The government can now forward to the President of Pakistan whenever it likes,” he said.

Shahzad Atta Elahi had resigned from his post citing personal reasons on Friday. He was appointed attorney general by the federal government after Mansoor Usman Awan refused to take the post.

On December 24 last, Mansoor Usman Awan, a young lawyer from Lahore, was appointed as the new Attorney General of Pakistan after President Dr Arif Alvi had approved his nomination as the country's 37th Principal Law Officer but he declined the office.

Before that, Ashtar Ausaf had resigned as attorney general on October 12, 2022, due to ill-health.
