Rejecting the police’s request for an extension in the physical remand of PTI leader Shabbir Gujjar, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Thursday acquitted Gujjar in the case of firing at a police team, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

ATC judge Arshad Javed pronounced the verdict.

Salim Ladi Advocate and other lawyers appeared in the court on behalf of the PTI leader.

Earlier, Gujjar was produced in the court on the completion of a three-day physical remand.

The investigation officer (IO) told the judge that the defendant, along with other PTI workers, attacked the police personnel in Valencia Town in the limits of Sattoo Katla police station of Lahore. “The PTI leader and his accomplices crashed their cars into the cops manning a picket,” he said, adding, “They also opened fire at them and even beat them up.”

Gujjar, the IO went on to say, even snatched an SMG Rifle from a policeman. “Following the incident, a case was registered against the PTI leader and other men at Sattoo Katla police station in which terrorism-related sections were inserted,” he said.

Counsel for the suspect, on the other hand, said that his client was twice elected an MPA, and that he had been booked only to victimize him because of his association with the PTI. “Therefore, I pray to the court to acquit him in the case,” the lawyer said.
