Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah reached Malir and adjoining areas in Karachi after PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari directed him to monitor the situation caused by torrential rains, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The national and provincial lawmakers from the PPP as well as party office-bearers, elected members of local government, Karachi commissioner and the officials from local government and irrigation departments accompanied him during the visit.
Speaking on the occasion, Nasir said the process of rescuing the people stuck in the affected areas was in full swing. The affected families were being provided with food and other services on an urgent basis, he added.
Similarly, the irrigation department had been directed to immediately start working on repairing the breaches on different locations along the banks of Malir Nadi (River), said the provincial minister.
Nasir said work also started to deal with the braches where the leaking water was affecting the populated areas.
About the rain intensity, the minister said the latest spell was several times heavier than the expectations, shattering all the previous records.
He noted that the government officials were on the ground in their respective districts to provide services to the citizens for the last 24 hours in the aftermath of heavy rains.
The chief minister, Nasir mentioned, was currently visiting different parts of Sindh after earlier reaching Malir. The provincial cabinet members and PPP parliamentarians too were in their respective constituencies among the people to provide relief to them.
