The federal cabinet approved the deployment of the Army and Rangers in Punjab to ensure foolproof security of the Asia Cup Cricket Tournament, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Saturday.

Four matches of the tournament are scheduled in Punjab and according to the Pakistan Cricket Board, three matches will be played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and one in Multan.

The Punjab government made a request to the Center for the deployment, sources said, adding that the Interior Ministry forwarded the summary to the cabinet that accorded approval via circulation.

The Army and Rangers will be deployed from August 27 to September 6, they said.

The Punjab Rangers will be deployed in the second-tier Quick Reaction Forces (QRFs) and the Army deployment will be in third-tier QRF mode while the Special Forces will be on standby, the insiders added.
