The United Nations Security Council has been informed that Afghanistan-based terrorist groups like Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan pose a serious threat in conflict zones and neighbouring countries.
According to Radio Pakistan, Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov and Executive Director of Counter-Terrorism Committee, Natalia Gherman, briefed the 15-member Council in this regard, after presenting the 17th report of the UN Secretary-General on the threat posed by Da’esh to international peace and security.
The report said the NATO-calibre weapons typically associated with former Afghan National Defence and Security Forces are being transferred to ISIL-K by groups affiliated with Taliban and Al-Qaida, such as TTP.
It may be mentioned that Pakistan has already been drawing the international community’s attention to the increasing attacks by the TTP, now equipped with advanced weapons left behind by U.S.-led coalition forces withdrawing from Afghanistan and fleeing Afghan troops.
However, the Afghan Taliban government’s spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid rejected the UN officials’ “baseless accusations” in his statement on X (formerly Twitter).
