Rising heat bakes many cities as temperature touches 53C

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert regarding the ongoing heatwave and extreme temperatures in Punjab, with mercury expected to soar past 50 degrees Celsius today (Monday), reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, the severe heatwave is also expected to persist in southern Punjab, prompting the Chief Minister of Punjab to instruct relevant agencies to remain on high alert.
The spokesperson further mentioned that the heatwave could be particularly intense in Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Multan areas.
Yesterday, temperatures reached 50 degrees in Khanpur, 49 degrees in Bhakkar, and 48 degrees in Kot Addu. In the plains, including Lahore, temperatures were recorded up to 44 degrees. Last year, the highest recorded temperature was 46 degrees.
The PDMA alert advised avoiding strenuous activity and exercise in direct sunlight, staying indoors unless necessary, and wearing light-coloured cotton clothing. In case of emergency, citizens can call the PDMA helpline at 1129 or Rescue 1122.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said that heatwave counters have been established in all hospitals and necessary medications for heat stroke prevention are being ensured. He also urged the public to take precautionary measures, emphasizing the need to take special care of children, the elderly, and the sick, as they are more susceptible to the effects of extreme heat.
The most of parts of the country also remained under the influence of a severe heatwave and record high temperatures as yesterday, Mohanjo Daro experienced record temperatures of 53°C, Jacobabad 52°C, Dadu 51°C, Rohri 50°C, Rahim Yar Khan 49°C, and Multan 48°C. Lahore and Peshawar recorded 43°C, Muzaffarabad, 41°C, and Karachi 32°C.
The meteorological experts indicated that there is no chance of rain in the next 24 hours in Lahore and temperature could reach up to 46°C this week.
The experts said the temperature in Lahore is expected to reach 44°C today (Monday) as the mercury has reached 39 degrees in the morning in the city while Islamabad is anticipated to experience temperatures between 40°C and 42°C today.
Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz stated that Karachi might experience an increase in heat intensity this week with temperatures expected to reach between 40°C and 42°C from May 29 to May 31 and it could be marked as the hottest week of the year.
He said the rise in temperature is attributed to hot and dry northwesterly winds with humidity levels ranging between 20% and 25%.
However, sea breezes may resume in the evening, he said adding that a decrease in temperature is expected in the first week of June with temperatures likely to range between 35°C and 37°C.
It is worth mentioning that due to hot and dry weather, Lahore has also ranked fourth in the global air pollution index, with an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 157.
