A few days ago, worn out after a day's work in Lahore, I decided to unwind by listening to music on my way home. Opting for Hollywood songs, I was cruising from Ferozepur Road towards Kasur Road when a Chinese song named "Going Home" started playing. Instantly, memories of my days in Lijiang, Yunnan province, China, flooded back. This particular song was popular there, and if you're interested, you can find it on YouTube.

This nostalgic journey through the melody transported me back to an extraordinary performance I witnessed in Lijiang. The recollection is vivid - a local theatre, 500 performers, and the enchanting tune of "Going Home." I owe my gratitude to the Chinese government for granting me the opportunity to witness such a captivating performance live.

Let's rewind to the last year of November 2023 when I, alongside fellow journalists from various countries, embarked on a tour of the Yunnan province of China. Our exploration led us to an ancient city in Lijiang, steeped in history and surrounded by a diverse population of ethnic minorities, including Naxi and others.

Lijiang, once a bustling trade centre in the 1300s, has preserved its old city with meandering alleys, rivers, shops, and the vibrant Central Market Square. The city's architectural beauty reflects a fusion of diverse cultures. UNESCO has rightfully acknowledged and commended Lijiang for its beauty and conservation efforts.

As we strolled through charming alleys and explored ancient cultural artifacts, we got a glimpse into the mountainous lifestyle of the locals. Our journey culminated in witnessing the Lijiang performance, where locals and visitors from other Chinese cities gathered in large numbers, leaving us in awe.

Guided by officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Yunnan province, our journey took an unexpected turn. A grand building with musical tunes playing awaited us, and behind its doors was a large, uniquely constructed theatre. The venue, seemingly carved out of the mountain, provided a breathtaking backdrop with the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in view.

The Black Cap performance of the Li Jiang region, akin to a VIP welcome, unfolded before us. The precision in the stage design made it seem like a mountain crafted with finesse. The performance, a blend of dance and music depicting vivid scenes from the past, captivated us despite the cold season in LiJiang.

While the local participants spoke their dialect, English explanations accompanied the story for international attendees. Diverse ethnic groups in traditional attire showcased their performances, including remarkable equestrian displays. The touching love story that unfolded on stage resonated with the audience, and local youth expressed their admiration enthusiastically.

The storytelling and performances unveiled a rich cultural history, with participants speaking various ethnic languages and adorned in traditional attire. The experience concluded with the soulful "Going Home," leaving us reflective, especially as we prepared to return home.

When people ask about my memorable moments in China, I describe it as a second home due to the warmth and hospitality of its people. To truly understand this, I encourage others to experience China firsthand. Reflecting on my four-month stay during CIPCC Program, connecting with the Chinese people with sincerity and goodwill remains the key.

It's clear that the fusion of cultures in Lijiang, the preserved historical sites, and the mesmerizing performances make it a destination worth exploring. For areaders, Lijiang offers not just a journey through time but an immersion into the heart of diverse cultures and warm hospitality.
