Instagram has rolled out a highly requested feature for Reels, allowing users to watch short video clips at 2x speed.
While Reels are typically only about a minute long, Instagram extended their length to 3 minutes back in January, meaning longer clips are now more common. So, this new feature could actually come in handy, and it’s clear that many users have been asking for it.
According to Instagram:
“Today, we’re globally launching the ability to play an Instagram Reel at 2x speed. This has been a highly requested feature from our community, and we hope that being able to fast forward helps give you more control over your Reels experience as you connect with friends over content you love and enjoy.”
To watch a Reel at double speed, simply long-press on the right or left edge of the screen during playback. The video will play at 2x speed until you release.
Currently, there are no other playback speed options—it's just 2x or nothing. However, you can still skip ahead as usual to get to the punchline quicker.
Will this be a hit? Given the fast-paced nature of media and shrinking attention spans, people are already accustomed to speeding up content—many listen to podcasts at 2x speed or watch YouTube videos at a faster pace to take in more info.
Since users have been requesting this feature (and it’s already available on platforms like TikTok), it seems like a potentially popular and useful update.
Instagram says the 2x playback option will be available to all users starting today.
