Govt forms committee for restoring students’ unions

The Ministry of Education has constituted a high-level committee to discuss the prospects of restoration of students’ unions in colleges and universities, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

The 14-member committee, consisting of universities’ vice-chancellors, researchers and academicians, will submit its report to the ministry within 10 days.

Seven days ago, on September 20, 2023, Senate’s Standing Committee on Education, with Senator Irfan Siddiqui in the chair, deliberated at length on the revival of students’ unions and maintained that its revival should be improvised according to new trends and mindset of the young generation.

Members of the Senate committee concurred that half a century old student unions needed to be restored.

The committee, while taking up the bill titled, the Islamabad Capital Territory Student Union, Bill 2023, tabled by Senator Bahramand Tangi noted that since long serious issues related to discrimination and injustice to students remained unattended.
