The Sindh government has decided to file an appeal against the Supreme Court’s decision to free Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British citizen of the Pakistani origin, in the murder case of Daniel Pearl.
Pearl was an American journalist who was working for The Wall Street Journal at the time of his murder in Pakistan in 2002.
Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has said the Sindh government would file an appeal with the Supreme Court of Pakistan, asking the court to review its decision to release Umar Sheikh. He said the provincial government would fulfil the legal formalities before going into the appeal in the Daniel Pearl murder case.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court told the Pakistani authorities to release Omar Sheikh, the prime accused in the 2002 beheading of Daniel Pearl, dismissing an appeal by the Sindh government against the Sindh High Court (SHC) order for his release.
The top Pakistani court is also hearing appeals against the high court's earlier acquittal of Sheikh and decision on these appeals has not been announced yet.
Thursday’s short order for Umar Sheikh’s release was issued by a three-judge SC bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam. One member on the bench had opposed Umar Sheikh’s release.
