Gunmen killed 10 members of a family in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, provincial officials said, attributing the killings to a "personal dispute".

"Unidentified individuals opened fire on a house, killing 10 people, including three women," said Farid Wahaj, governor of Alisher district in eastern Khost province where the murders took place.

Khost governor spokesman Mustaghfar Gurbaz told AFP the attack was "the result of a personal dispute".

Wahaj said investigations were underway, without providing further details.

Security has improved in Afghanistan since foreign troops withdrew in 2021 and the Taliban ended their insurgency as they swept back to power, but killings blamed on enmity between individuals or tribes remain common.
