IHC suspends physical remand of journalist Matiullah Jan

Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday suspended physical remand of detained journalist Matiullah Jan which was earlier granted by an anti-terrorism court, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

A two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court headed by Chief Justice Amer Farooq and Justice Arbab Mohammad Tahir conducted hearing of the case.

The court directed consul of the petitioner to read order of anti-terrorism court regarding physical remand of Matiullah Jan. Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) President Riasat Ali Azad appeared before the court.

The IHC suspended order of anti-terrorism court and instead sent him to jail on judicial remand.

Journalist Matiullah Jan’s consul Emaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha were also present in the court.

Earlier, Matiullah Jan challenged his physical remand granted by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad High Court (IHC). Matiullah Jan’s counsel Imaan Mazari said that her client was arrested on fake and baseless charges, so they have decided to challenge his physical remand in IHC.

She further said that they prayed the court to hear their petition on priority basis.

IHCBA demands judicial inquiry

Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) demanded judicial inquiry into Matiullah Jan case.

A statement issued on Friday, IHCBA President Riasat Ali Azad strongly condemned registration of fake, forge and baseless FIR against Matiullah Jan after his mysterious abduction.

The statement termed the FIR an attack on independent journalism. He demanded that concerned authorities should hold a judicial inquiry of the case filed against journalist Matiullah Jan.

They also demanded to withdraw the case and release journalist Matiullah Jan at the earliest.
