Pak Army, FWO lead massive drain clearance drive in Karachi

Pakistan Army and FWO teams reached Gujjar Nullah Monday morning to assist the civilian authorities in clearance of the city’s mostly encroached sewerage drains.

The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) personnel have reached Gujjar Nullah with over 50 dumpers, cranes and other machinery to remove garbage, which had chocked free flow of the water in the drain in recent rainfall and submerged adjacent area.

Paramilitary Rangers personnel have also been deployed at the site of the drain clearance work. The drive has been launched under the oversight of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The garbage from the sewerage drain being immediately transferred to the landfill site.

The drain clearance work has also been started at ‘Cafe Piala’ in Federal B’ Area of Karachi with heavy machinery and other equipment.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also visited the site and inspected the situation there.

Talking to media, he said it was true that they could not execute plane to clean the drains due to the coronavirus pandemic but Sindh government did not sit idle and have specified special budget for the purpose.

He said there are different kinds of problems of drainage in different areas of the city and they were trying to improve the drainage system before August 6 when the second spell of heavy rains is expected.

People of the area gathered there and told the CM about the misery they were into when the nullah got overflowed. They complained that their homes and streets were no being cleaned.

Murad Ali Shah directed Nasir Shah to convey the MC Central to either work properly or pack their bags. He said he wanted to get the area cleaned and look after the people properly.
