Govt approaches IMF for relief in electricity bills

Pakistan has approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with a set of proposals aimed a lessening the burden of inflated electricity bills on the common man, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

Sources in the Federal Finance Ministry confided to 24News TV channel that there had been a virtual contact between the Pakistani and the IMF officials.

Caretaker Federal Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar established the contact with IMF Representative in Pakistan Esther Perez Ruiz and discussed ways to provide relief in the electricity bills.

The finance minister also conveyed the situation to the IMF officials arising out of the masses received the bills with hefty hikes.

The IMF official was briefed about the Pakistan government’s case about relief in the electricity bills, the sources said and added Esther Perez Ruiz has sought a written plan from the government about the purpose.

There is a possibility that the written plan will be forwarded to the IMF by Wednesday evening.

It may be mentioned here that the Caretaker Federal Cabinet had held two sessions under Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq in the chair to hammer out any relief for the public but to no avail after furious protests against the whopping electricity bills were reported from almost all of the country for many days.
