The Punjab Home Department has approved a groundbreaking scheme to transition all provincial jails to solar power, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.
According to the report, this ambitious project, estimated to cost Rs2.3 billion, will cover all 44 prisons in Punjab, significantly reducing energy expenses.
Currently, the annual electricity bill for Punjab’s prisons amounts to Rs 2 billion. With the transition to solar energy, the department estimates billions in annual savings, marking a major step toward energy efficiency and sustainability.
The solarisation of jails is part of Punjab’s broader initiative to reduce costs and promote renewable energy solutions.
The move is expected to bring substantial financial relief and set a precedent for other public institutions in Pakistan.
