Lahore High Court Justice Farooq Haider is set to hear the petition against the PECA Amendment Act 2025 tomorrow as an urgent case, reported 24NewsHDTV Channel.
The federal government through the cabinet division, PTA and others have been made parties in the petition filed by journalist Jafar Bin Yar against the PECA Amendment Act.
The petitioner contended that under the Amendment Act, fake information will be punishable with three years imprisonment and fine. After the addition of new penalties in the Act, the freedom of speech will vanish. The petitioner claimed that PECA Bill was brought without consultation of stakeholders and journalists organizations. The PECA Amendment Act is unconstitutional and inconsistent with the protection of freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution. Therefore the court should declared the Act unconstitutional and null and void.
