Alarm bells in Pakistan as coronavirus kills 86 people in single day

The alarm bells must be sounded in Pakistan as the coronavirus has killed 86 people in a single day with the positivity ratio drawing close to eight percent.

As many as 4,537 more people were infected by coronavirus during the last 24 hours (Thursday) across the country, showed the data released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Friday morning.

As per the latest NCOC figures, with the addition of 86 new deaths the toll has now soared to 23,295 whereas the total number of cases has now reached 1,024,861 after adding 4,537 new ones.

During the past 24 hours (Thursday), as many as 1,489 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 938,843. As of Friday, the total count of active cases was recorded at 62,723 whereas the positivity ratio was recorded at 7.79 percent.

As many as 377,231 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 355,483 in Punjab, 143,213 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 86,945 in Islamabad, 30,162 in Balochistan, 23,819 in Azad Kashmir and 8,008 in Gilgit Baltistan.

Moreover, 11,019 individuals have so far lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab, 5,947 in Sindh, 4,444 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 799 in Islamabad, 622 in Azad Kashmir, 327 in Balochistan and 137 in Gilgit Baltistan.

GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTS

British pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca says that its Covid jab generated $1.2 billion (1.0 billion euros) in sales in the first half of the year as global vaccination programmes accelerated.

- Middle East surge -
The World Health Organization says the Delta variant has led to a "surge" in coronavirus outbreaks triggering a "fourth wave" in the Middle East region, stretching from Morocco to Pakistan, and where vaccination rates remain low.

- Catalonia curfew -
Spain's Catalonia extends for a second time a nightime curfew that was imposed on the tourist hotspot, including the city of Barcelona, to fight a Covid-19 surge.

- French territory locked down -
France's Indian Ocean territory of La Reunion will go into a partial lockdown at the weekend due to a surge in Covid-19 infections, as Britain acknowledges the situation on the island is behind tight restrictions on travel from France.

- Juventus in quarantine -
Juventus' first team has been put in quarantine after Tunisian midfielder Hamza Rafia tested positive, the Turin club says.

- Four million dead -
The coronavirus has killed at least 4,190,383 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.

The United States is the worst-affected country with 611,801 deaths, followed by Brazil with 553,179, India with 422,662, Mexico with 239,616 and Peru with 196,138 fatalities. 

The World Health Organization says up to three times the number suggested by official figures have died directly or indirectly as a result of the pandemic.
