Lahore emerges as second most polluted city in world amid smog

The issue of smog persists in several cities of the country as Lahore became the world’s second most polluted city on Monday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

The situation was worst in DHA Phase-8 area of the city where the air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 484 followed by Syed Muratab Ali where the AQI was 457.

Similarly, the AQI over the US consulate was recorded at 392, and at Johar Town it was 384.

Doctors have advised people to avoid traveling unnecessarily so that they could protect themselves from the hazardous effects of smog.

Karachi fifth most polluted city in country

Karachi, with the AQI standing at 158, was ranked as the fifth most polluted city of the country.

Korangi Sector-15 area of the port city was worst in terms of air quality as the AQI there was recorded at 149.

It was followed by the areas surrounding Railways Quarters in Lala Zar while the AQI over the US consulate stood at 146.

The Met Office, on the other hand, predicted comparatively hot and humid weather for the city.

The situation was worst in Lahore yesterday as the AQI in Lahore, the city of gardens, shot up to 480, making it one of the most polluted cities in the world.

However, later with increase in temperature, the AQI came down to 377.

Peshawar, with the AQI recorded at 192, was the country’s second most polluted city; Haripur with 164 points remained third while Rawalpindi with 162 points was the fourth most polluted city in the country.

Karachi and Islamabad did not lag behind either with 158 and 157 AQI, respectively. 

In Lahore, the smog considerably reduced visibility on roads.

Weathermen, on the other hand, predicted the situation to get further worse by November 10.  

Motorway and the National Highway Police urged motorists to drive carefully by not crossing the speed limit, while doctors, on the other hand, advised people to avoid exposure to smog by not travelling unnecessarily and if they had no other choice, wear facemasks before stepping out of their homes.  

Smog in Karachi

Korangi Sector 15, with the AQI recorded at 155, was ranked as the most polluted part of Karachi followed by the areas surrounding railway quarters in Lala Zar where the AQI was recorded at 153.

The US consulate, with the AQI standing at 146, was the third most polluted area of the port city.
