Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said Tuesday that a drone had hit a university in the North Caucasus region used to train thousands of volunteers to fight in Ukraine.

"As a result of a drone attack from the air a roof caught fire on an empty building of the Russian Special Forces University in Gudermes at 6:30 am (0330 GMT)," Kadyrov wrote on Telegram, saying there were "no casualties" and the fire was extinguished.

An investigation is underway, Kadyrov said, adding the university was working as normal.

The university has trained more than 19,000 volunteers to fight in Ukraine since Russia launched its 2022 offensive, TASS state news agency reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin toured the university in August on a rare visit to Chechnya.

Russian independent media reported that this was the first drone attack on Chechnya.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian drones hit the North Caucasus region of Adygeya, in an attack Kyiv said set fire to a fuel depot at an air base.
