Newborn Indian twins named Corona and Covid

April 4, 2020 08:06 PM

Strange, is not it! A couple in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh has named their newborn twins Corona and Covid.

The twins — a boy and a girl — were born during the ongoing 21-day long nationwide lockdown that began on March 24.

“The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, my husband and I wanted to make the day memorable,” Preeti Verma, the 27-old mother of the twins, told Press Trust of India news agency.

She said she and her husband had been stopped by police several times on their way to the hospital, with road traffic also subject to restrictions. As an added difficulty, the twins were reportedly born by cesarean section.

Justifying the choice of the unusual names, Verma stressed that the pandemic had not had only negative effects, but had also encouraged people to think about sanitation, hygiene and other good health practices.

The couple said the names would remind them about the hardships they faced during the lockdown and ahead of the successful delivery in a government hospital last week.

However, the couple reportedly said they might change their decision later and give their children other names.

The lockdown in India has resulted in the suspension of trains and airline services and effectively kept 1.3 billion Indians at home for all but essential trips to places like markets or pharmacies.

India has 3,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus across the country, including 84 deaths.
