Karachi braces for Rs802b transformation plan

The federal government is expected to unveil development projects worth Rs802 billion under the ‘Karachi Transformation Plan,’ reported 24NewsHD on Friday.
Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Karachi on Saturday and would announce the details of the plan.
According to details, Rs47.18billion have been spent so far on the development projects including in the Karachi Transformation Plan while another Rs723.25billion will be required to execute the mass transformation of the biggest city and the economic hub of the country, which is suffering since decades due to the absence of adequate town planning and lack of civic amenities.
However, in the current fiscal year, only Rs32billion have been specified for the different project under the plan.
Under the plan, six mass transit projects worth Rs447.43billion would be announced to give the people of Karachi an easy and cost-effective way to move around. These projects also include Karachi Circular Railway project, which has also been ordered to be restored by the Supreme Court of Pakistan and would cost Rs300billion. Among this Rs300bilion, China will provide RS250billion for the Karachi Circular Railway while Sindh will add other Rs50billion.
The plan also includes eight projects to improve the sewerage system of the city, which remained choked whenever it rains. These eight projects would cost Rs162.60billion.
To address another major problem of the city, Rs14.86billion have been specified for the four solid waste management projects. Similarly, Rs4.70 billion have been specified for the two water drains projects.
Meanwhile, Rs62.30billion would be spent to improve the road infrastructure in the city including new construction and repair work.
