A severe shortage of anti-rabies vaccine has been looming large because its price is going to be twofold, 24News HD TV channel reported on Monday.

According to sources, the National Institute of Health (NIH) proposed a significant price increase, suggesting that the cost of the vaccine be raised from Rs 800 to Rs 1800.

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) received this proposal from the NIH, which cited the rising cost of raw materials as the primary reason for the price hike.

The proposed increase is aimed at offsetting the higher production costs, ensuring the continued availability of the vaccine.

The sources added until the new price is approved, the supply of anti-rabies vaccines in public sector hospitals will remain disrupted.

Sources indicated that the NIH submitted a summary to DRAP, detailing the need for the new pricing structure to address the supply chain issues.

The proposed price hike reflects the growing financial pressures on vaccine production due to increased raw material costs.
