Cabinet panel abolishes President’s power to give poll date

A cabinet committee has approved an amendment to the Election Act that seeks to end President’s authority to announce the election date, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The Cabinet Committee on Legislation on Wednesday approved the amendment to Section 57 and 58 of the Election Act.
Under Section 57, the Election Commission of Pakistan is obliged to consult the President over the election date.
After the new amendment, the President will no longer have the authority to announce the poll date.
The draft of the approved amendment will be presented in the next meeting of the cabinet.
