On January 5, 2025, Pakistan observed the Right to Self-Determination Day for the People of Jammu & Kashmir, marking 76 years since the adoption of the historic United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution in 1949.

This resolution guarantees the right of the Kashmiri people to decide their future through a free and impartial plebiscite, 24NewsHD TV Channel reported on Sunday.

According to the report, in his message, President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast political, diplomatic, and moral support for the Kashmiri people in their quest for self-determination. “Regrettably, India has denied this right to the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) for over seven decades,” he said.

He condemned India's steps to alter the demographic and political fabric of IIOJK since August 5, 2019, and called on the international community to hold India accountable for its actions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasised in his statement that self-determination is a core principle of the UN Charter and international law.

He urged the international community to act decisively, ensuring the Kashmiri people can exercise their inalienable rights. “The UN General Assembly annually reiterates this principle, yet the Kashmiri people remain deprived of their freedom for over 75 years,” the Prime Minister lamented.
