The Armed Forces of Pakistan, CJCsSC and Services Chiefs have paid glowing tribute to Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) on his 52nd martyrdom anniversary, ISPR said.
During the 1971 war, Major Shabbir Sharif was ordered to capture high ground near the Sulemanki Headworks, it said, adding that the position was defended by Indian infantry, supported by a squadron of tanks.
Major Shabbir Sharif captured the area by killing 43 Indian soldiers and destroying four tanks, the military media wing maintained, adding that he and his men also repulsed counter-attacks of two enemy battalions.
It continued: "The heroic actions of Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed in the 1965 and 1971 wars remind us that it was not numbers but faith, devotion and courage in adversity which make nations triumph.
"Let us remember these heroes who have laid down their lives in defence of the motherland. The nation is proud of its gallant sons."
