The street children in Mardan are rapidly falling prey to Saman Bond addiction as they abuse the adhesive for getting high, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
Hundreds of street children in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa city sniff or swallow the glue as Samad Bond is the cheapest and easily available thing that makes them high.
All day long, these children keep begging on streets or clean windows of cars, and in the night, they abuse the adhesive to become forgetful of all their pains and sorrows of economic injustice and lay oblivious on the footpaths.
The children who use Samad Bond as addiction usually lie in the age group of 8-18 years old.
Social workers believe that most of the children who are addicted to glue sniffing or other drugs are not in close contacts with their families.
The inaction by the Mardan district administration and the Child Protection Bureau leaves a big question mark on their performance.
Though police are cracking down on the peddlers of other drugs like hashish, ice and heroin but they are not interested in doing something to purge the city of this bane which is seriously impacting the health of the minors.
According to health experts, chronic and prolonged abuse of Samad Bond may have resulted in the cardiac, renal, neurological and hematological complications.
Social activists are urging the government to establish rehabilitation centres where the cured children can stay for a while after their treatment is complete, and that awareness campaigns should be launched to help people realize the gravity of the situation.
