In a remarkable development for Pakistan's agricultural sector, the Pakistan Economic Survey (PES) 2023-24 has revealed substantial increases in the country's livestock number over the last financial year, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.


According to the survey, the number of donkeys has been on the rise as during the past few years as its population witnessed an increase of 100,000 to reach 5.9 million during the fiscal year 2023-24, compared with 5.8 million during the previous fiscal year.


Pakistan has the world’s third-largest population of donkeys, while China stands at number one.


Likewise, the buffalo number experienced a growth of 1.3 million, rising from 45 million to 46.3 million.


Similarly, the number of sheep increased by 400,000, reaching a total of 3.27 million from the previous count of 3.23 million.


The goat population saw an even more significant rise, with an addition of 2.3 million, taking the total from 84.7 million to 87 million.


Camels also saw an increase, albeit smaller, with their numbers going up by 100,000, resulting in a total population of 1.2 million.


However, the numbers of horses and mules remained unchanged, standing at 400,000 and 200,000 respectively.


Overall, the livestock population in Pakistan has grown by 2 million in a single year, indicating a robust expansion from 55.5 million to 57.5 million.
