The Institute for Public Opinion Research (IPOR) recently conducted a quantitative survey to assess public sentiment on political protests, lockdowns, and their socio-economic impact in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The study, conducted from November 26 to November 29, 2024, involved 310,668 mobile phone users through systematic sampling.

Key Findings of the survey

Support for Protests: An overwhelming 73% of respondents expressed support for peaceful protests, emphasising the democratic right to demonstrate without causing disruption.
Disruption of Daily Life: A significant 82% believed PTI-led protests caused severe disruptions to the daily lives of residents in the twin cities.
Economic Impacts: 74% reported adverse effects on their businesses or incomes due to the protests and lockdowns.
Government Response: Public opinion remains divided, with 42% justifying government measures during lockdowns and 48% viewing them as excessive.
Responsibility for Economic Crisis: While 18% held PTI and opposition parties accountable for the economic fallout, 53% blamed the government and coalition parties.

Broader Concerns
The survey highlighted that 66% of respondents perceive political protests and rallies as the primary driver of instability in Pakistan. Additionally, 68% stated they would not support PTI's protests if they caused inconvenience to the public.

Demographics
The sample comprised 63% males and 37% females, with respondents across various age and educational groups. The largest age cohort was between 25 and 34 years old (31%), while education levels ranged from illiterate (11%) to master’s degree holders (3%).

The findings underscore the public's frustration with the socio-economic and political instability stemming from protests, reflecting a clear call for more balanced and constructive approaches to political demonstrations.
