The suspect in the murder case of four-year-old Zahra, who escaped from police custody last night, was killed in an encounter with Sarai Alamgir police on Friday.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the prime suspect, Nadeem, fled with handcuffs from a moving police van while being taken to Khohar village for evidence recovery.
Gujrat district police reported that following his escape, a heavy contingent of Sarai Alamgir police was deployed, initiating an extensive search operation to apprehend him.
A case had already been registered against Nadeem for his escape, based on a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Iftikhar of Sarai Alamgir's Sadar Police Station.
However, during the search operation, the suspect was located and subsequently killed in a police encounter.
Sarai Alamgir police performance under scrutiny
It is pertinent to mention that the performance of Sarai Alamgir police has already been under scrutiny, as on April 2, 2023, the same police station faced criticism for arresting a six-year-old boy on the charge of rape.
In April 2023, a man filed a complaint at the Sarai Alamgir police station, alleging the rape of his daughter. Acting promptly, the police arrested the six-year-old boy on rape charges.
The citizens protested at the police station, questioning how a six-year-old could commit such an act. They accused the child's family opponents of lodging a false case to harass them.
The police had maintained at the time that no action would be taken against the child until the arrival of his DNA report but insisted that they were acting based on the father’s complaint.
