Punjab govt trims down number of law officers

Punjab government has decided to decrease the number of law officers and in this regard resignations have been taken from law officers, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.


According to sources, on the summons, the law officers referred their resignation to the Advocate General Punjab.


On the other hand, the number of judges in the Lahore High Court has reached 38 while the number of law officers has reached 88, sources revealed.


Chaudhry Pervez Elahi's decision to increase the number of law officers became a burden on the government treasury.


Sources said that Pervaiz Elahi increased the number of law officers to 96 in the presence of 43 judges in September 2022.


Law officers worried about resignation under pressure of Advocate General Office and most of them contacted with advocates who recommended their names for the posts, sources added.


Sources further said that the resignations of Additional Advocate General and Assistant Advocate General who do not meet the criteria will be accepted.


According to the list prepared by the Advocate General, some law officers will continue to work while some will be newly recruited, sources said.


They said 24 Additional Advocate Generals and 64 Assistant Advocate Generals are working for courts of 38 judges, sources further said.


Additional Advocate General Punjab is receiving Rs650000 while Assistant Advocate General is receiving Rs536000 as salary package.


Law officers are provided with privileges of grade 21 and 22 officers, office staff, deputy courts and other facilities, sources said.
