Pakistan sees record 3,938 new COVID-19 cases, 78 deaths

As the government decided to further relax the lockdown, Pakistan experienced its worst day in terms of the reported coronavirus cases after another 3,938 people tested positive for the virus during the past 24 hours (Monday).

With the addition of these latest cases, the overall number of the coronavirus-infected people in the country has now climbed to 76,398.

According to the figures released by National Command and Operation Centre, the country recorded another 78 deaths during the same period, increasing the death toll to 1,621.

The latest figures represent an alarming trend as the country has been experiencing an alarming rise in the coronavirus cases and the related deaths.

On Monday, it was revealed that the Punjab Health Department warned the provincial government that the Lahore had become the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic as the number of infected people was estimated to be at 670,000. But the Punjab government rejected the summary and the proposal for a complete four-week lockdown.

Most of the deaths recorded on Monday were reported in Punjab where 43 patients died of the virus followed by 22 in Sindh.

As far as the coronavirus cases are concerned, Sindh tops the list with 29,647 infected people. It is followed by 27,850 in Punjab, 10,485 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 4,514 in Balochistan, 2,893 in Islamabad, 738 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 271 in Azad Kashmir.

Currently, there are 47,667 active cases in Pakistan while a total of 27,110 patients have fully recovered from the infection. 

Meanwhile, the region-wise distribution of the deaths is: Punjab 540, Sindh 503, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 482, Balochistan 49, Islamabad 30, Gilgit-Baltistan 11 and Azad Kashmir six.

On the other hand, the total number of tests conducted since the coronavirus outbreak in the country has now increased to 577,974. In this connection, 16,548 tests were carried out during the past 24 hours.
