Apple's annual September event is almost upon us, with the tech giant poised to unveil its latest offerings. This year, the anticipation centres on the debut of the iPhone 15, alongside potential upgrades to Apple Watch and perhaps glimpses into Apple's broader ecosystem.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, and Apple has already sent out its traditional invites. Historically, Apple has used September to launch its new iPhones, and this year seems to be no different.
Last year, Apple introduced the world to the Dynamic Island, a nifty design upgrade to the notch on its Pro models. This feature converted a previously unused portion of the screen into an interactive and engaging space. While it was exclusively reserved for the Pro variants in the past, rumours suggest a rollout across the entire iPhone 15 range this year. Speculated models include the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with the latter potentially being rebranded to 'Ultra'.
However, the Dynamic Island isn't the only anticipated change. The new iPhones may closely mirror their predecessors but with nuanced differences. Features to look out for include a user-customizable "action" button, a slightly more contoured front glass, and a robust titanium frame for the Pro models. This action button is expected to revolutionize the user experience by replacing the mute switch with customizable commands.
Another major shift might be in the charging department. Long-standing rumours about Apple transitioning to a USB-C port may finally come true with the iPhone 15, signalling a farewell to the Lightning port.
On the tech front, the Pro models are expected to be powered by the new A17 chip, boasting better performance. Camera enhancements, such as a periscope-style telephoto camera for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and general upgrades across the range, are also anticipated. Coupled with faster charging capabilities, the iPhone 15 lineup is shaping up to be a significant leap from its predecessors.
Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 17, currently in its beta phase, is set to launch alongside the iPhone 15. Typically, new iPhones are available for purchase about a week post-launch. However, insider chatter suggests a slight delay in the iPhone 15 Pro Max's availability.
The September event isn't just about iPhones. Apple Watch aficionados have a lot to be excited about too. Following last year's introduction of the Series 8, Apple Watch SE, and the groundbreaking Apple Watch Ultra, 2023 might see the launch of the Series 9 and possibly a revamped Apple Watch Ultra. Although specific details remain scant, a faster processor and a new "black titanium" option might be in the cards for the Ultra.
Apple's other devices could also get a share of the spotlight. The AirPods Max, which hasn't seen an update since 2020, might be due for a refresh. The tech giant could also spill details about its upcoming Vision Pro virtual reality headset, set for a 2024 release. Additionally, with the iPad mini last updated in 2021, an upgrade this year isn't off the table.
As September 12 draws nearer, the tech world waits with bated breath for Apple's latest innovations, sure to set the tone for the industry in the upcoming year.
