The Embassy of Russia in Islamabad has stated that it is ‘closely following’ the developments in Pakistan, including the political situation and court decisions, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

“However, we believe that it is up to the Pakistani people to react to and comment on these developments,” the embassy said in an X post on Tuesday.

The embassy, however, did not mention any context of the post, leaving it to the users to make guesses.

While some linked it to the battle former prime minister and ex-PTI chairman Imran Khan was fighting in courts, others were astonished to see such a statement coming from the official social media account of the Russian embassy.

On Monday, Imran and his party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi got a major relief when the Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted them in the US cipher case.

The case pertains to a diplomatic document that reportedly went missing from Imran’s possession, and which the PTI alleges contained a threat from the United States to oust its government from office because of its stance on Russia.

The US, on the other hand, has always rejected such allegations.

Moreover, these days the Supreme Court (SC) is also seized with the hearing of the case of reserved seats of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC); the party which the PTI-backed independent candidates had joined after winning their seats in the February 8 general elections.

The SIC wants allotment of reserved seats in assemblies for women and minorities.

The case’s hearing has been adjourned until June 24.

It is worth-mentioning here that Russia had accused the United States of interfering in the internal affairs of Pakistan when Imran was ousted from his office in April, 2022.

Russia’s foreign ministry’s spokesperson had then alleged that the US punished Imran for being “disobedient” by visiting the Kremlin.

In its post, the Embassy of Russia in Pakistan also urged people to only follow its official social media pages.

“Please note that the official pages of the Embassy of Russia on social media platforms are the only credible source of information on our Ambassador’s engagements and activities,” it said.
