Over 100 people were killed Tuesday night in Israeli bombing of Gaza's largest refugee camp, with Israel's army confirming it had targeted the facility.

Wails filled the dusty air as volunteers clawed through the concrete blocks and twisted metal at the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza in a desperate search for bodies and survivors, with AFP video footage showing at least 47 corpses being recovered.

Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, had no immediate comment on the claim that one of its commanders was present in the refugee camp, but quickly vowed to turn Gaza into a "graveyard" for Israeli troops.

Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry gave an initial toll of more than 50 dead and 150 wounded, but said dozens more were likely buried under the rubble, denouncing what it called "a heinous Israeli massacre" at the camp.

Egypt lashed out at Israel's "inhumane targeting of a residential block". Sources said Cairo would open the Rafah crossing to treat wounded Palestinians in what would be the first time it has agreed to open the border to civilians since the conflict broke out.

Qatar, a key mediator in the crisis, condemned the Israeli attack on Jabalia and warned expanded strikes on the besieged Palestinian enclave would "undermine mediation and de-escalation efforts".

The strike came after a day of fierce battles between Israeli ground troops and Hamas fighters in northern Gaza.

Since October 7 Hamas attacks, Israel has hit back with an unstinting aerial bombardment, which the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza says has now killed more than 9,000 Palestinians, among them 3,542 children and 2,187 women.

Camp resident Ragheb Aqal, 41, likened the explosion to "an earthquake" and spoke of his horror at seeing "homes buried under the rubble and body parts and martyrs and wounded in huge numbers".

Jabalia is home to 116,000 people in an area covering 1.4 square kilometres (little more than half a square mile) -- about the size of London's Hyde Park.

Earlier, Israel said two of its soldiers had been killed in operations inside Gaza.

The carnage came as international leaders raised the alarm over the spiralling bloodshed and mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Gaza City resident Ahmed al-Kahlout voiced something of the desperation felt by so many inside the war-torn coastal territory. "We want to live like any other people in this world, to live quietly," he said.

"We don't know what to do. The least they can do is give us a truce, give us three hours, a temporary truce or a ceasefire."

Internet, phones 'completely' shut off in Gaza

Internet and communications were cut off in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the Palestinian telecommunications agency said.

"To our good people in the beloved country, we are sorry to announce that communications and internet services have been completely cut off in Gaza," the Palestine Telecommunications Company (Paltel) said on X.

UN denounces 'latest atrocity' after strikes on Gaza refugee camp

The United Nations on Wednesday decried strikes on Gaza's largest refugee camp that killed scores of people in attacks that Israel said targeted a Hamas commander.

"This is just the latest atrocity to befall the people of Gaza where the fighting has entered an even more terrifying phase, with increasingly dreadful humanitarian consequences," Martin Griffiths, the UN humanitarian chief, said in a statement.

- Attacks beyond borders -

Israel and Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement have traded near-daily fire since October 7 amid fears the conflict will spread to include other Iranian proxies.

On Tuesday Lebanon accused Israel of white phosphorus attacks over which it said it would file a complaint to the United Nations.

Elsewhere, Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels said they had attacked Israel on Tuesday, launching "a large batch of ballistic missiles" and "a large number of armed aircraft" at Iran's regional arch-foe.

Israel's army confirmed a "hostile aircraft intrusion" had set off warning sirens in Eilat, later saying a surface-to-surface missile was intercepted outside Israeli territory.

Iran said it was "natural" for such groups to attack Israel and warned of a wider spillover if no ceasefire is reached.

- Fierce battles, ambushes in Gaza -

Israeli forces were locked in "fierce battles" with Hamas militants deep inside Gaza, the army said Tuesday. Troops had hit anti-tank missile launching cells and observation posts, seizing many guns and explosives and killing dozens of militants "in the past few hours", it said.

Hamas's armed wing said it had ambushed troops in northern Gaza, with its fighters having "opened fire" on three Israeli military vehicles in Al-Tawam area.

The Israeli army later said two of its soldiers were killed during combat operations in northern Gaza.

- Envoy's yellow star angers Yad Vashem -

Israel's UN ambassador pinned a yellow star on his chest -- a symbol of the oppression of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe -- as he addressed the Security Council, denouncing it for "staying silent" over the October 7 bloodshed.

"We will wear this star until you wake up and condemn the atrocities of Hamas," he told the deeply divided 15-member council which has failed to adopt a single resolution on the war.

But his action was criticised by Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, which said Erdan's gesture "disgraces the victims of the Holocaust as well as the state of Israel".

- 'Stop these massacres' -

The humanitarian toll has sparked global concern, with Bolivia cutting off diplomatic ties with Israel.

Aid groups and the United Nations warned time is running out for many of the territory's 2.4 million people denied access to food, water, fuel and medicine.

Surgeons are conducting amputations on hospital floors without anaesthetic, and children are forced to drink salty water, said Jean-Francois Corty, vice-president of Medecins du Monde, which has 20 staff on the ground.

At a funeral in southern Gaza, tearful mourners cradled the bodies of relatives wrapped in white shrouds before burying them with their bare hands.

"We ask the world to show sympathy for the children to stop these massacres," Yusef Hijazi, the grandfather of one victim, told AFP.

As even Israel's staunchest allies voiced concern about the humanitarian crisis, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA said there was not nearly enough aid to meet the "unprecedented" needs.

Hisham Adwan, Gaza director of the Rafah crossing, said 36 trucks had been waiting there since the previous day.

"It's extremely slow," he said. Only 26 trucks entered Gaza on Monday. Before the conflict, an average of 500 trucks per working day were rumbling into the tiny coastal territory.

Israel has said it is inspecting cargo to make sure weapons are not being smuggled in.

- 'Great sorrow' -

As Israel steps up its assault on Gaza, the families of hostages are struggling with an unbearable wait for news of relatives thought to be held in the labyrinth of tunnels deep below Gaza.

"It's really hell. There are no words to express this," said Hadas Kalderon as she walked past the blackened homes of kibbutz Nir Oz where gunmen killed her mother and niece and kidnapped her 12-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter.

"I don't have any control and knowledge about army actions, I just know my children are still there in the middle of a war," said the 56-year-old.

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli army fire killed two Palestinians, a teen and a 70-year-old, the Palestinian health ministry said.

On Israel's southern flank, Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels confirmed they had attacked Israel on Tuesday, saying they had "launched a large batch of ballistic missiles... and a large number of armed aircraft" towards Israel in the third such operation since the Gaza assault began.

Israel's military said a "hostile aircraft intrusion" had set off warning sirens in Eilat, its Red Sea resort, later saying a surface-to-surface missile was "successfully intercepted by the 'Arrow' aerial defence system" outside of Israeli territory.

Israel army says 15 soldiers killed in Gaza since Tuesday

Fifteen Israeli soldiers have been killed fighting in Gaza since Tuesday, a spokesman for the country's military told AFP.

Israeli troops have been fighting Hamas militants on the ground since Friday, backed by heavy air strikes which have killed multiple civilians in the Palestinian territory.–Agencies
