The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has started work on the installation of e-gates at Pakistani airports, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

The project will be completed under the supervision of the aviation secretary and the CAA director general, the CAA sources said.

In the first phase, e-gates will be installed at Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi airports.

Proposals have also been sought from NADRA, FIA (Passport) and FIA (Immigration) regarding the e-gates project.

After the approval of the board, tenders will be called for the e-gates project. Passengers will be facilitated in immigration through e-gates as they will not have to show their passports and tickets.

As soon as passengers enter the airport, they will be able to scan their passports and tickets and get their boarding cards through e-gates.

E-gates use the data stored in the biometric passport chips. Passengers’ faces, fingerprints, and iris are recognised through automatic biometric verification.

After the identification process is complete, a physical barrier such as a gate or turnstile opens for passengers to pass.
