ECC refuses to release Rs10b maintenance funds to Pakistan Railways

The financial difficulties of Pakistan Railways are likely to increase further as the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has refused to release Rs10 billion worth of maintenance funds to the Ministry of Railways, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
The Pakistan Railways already carries the burden of Rs20 billion under the head of pension and other dues.
The Ministry of Railways had informed the ECC in writing about the financial difficulties and asked for immediate release of Rs10 billion to meet the expenses of repair, maintenance and pensions.
Funds were also sought to continue the train operation without disruption.
The ECC, however, approved Rs2.5 billion for the Pakistan Railways. Even Rs20 billion meant to restore train operations affected by floods have not been given to the railways.
The Ministry of Railways had approached the ECC for train operation restoration funds, but, Rs20 billion have not been given to the railways despite repeated requests.
