Pakistan elected as UNSC non-permanent member

Pakistan has been elected as one of the five new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Pakistan was elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council which met in New York on Thursday to elect five non-permanent members of the council.
The meeting was chaired by President General Assembly Dennis Francis. Pakistan was a contender for the Asian seat in the elections at the UN Security Council meeting. Pakistan needed the votes of 127 members while it got 182 votes out of a total of 185.
The 53-member Asia-Pacific group has endorsed Pakistan's candidacy. The Pakistani delegation was led by Permanent Representative Munir Akram and Usman Jadoon.
Pakistan will serve a two-year term starting January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026. The new members will replace Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms expire at the end of this year.
Under the UN Charter, the primary responsibility of the Security Council is to maintain international peace and security.
The Security Council consists of 15 countries, of which five - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States - are permanent members who have the right to veto any resolution or decision.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated the nation for becoming a member of the UNSC. PM Shehbaz said it was a proud moment for the entire nation.
The PM said, “Being elected as a member of the United Nations for 2025-26 with 182 votes was proof of our nation's commitment to peace and security”. He pledged that Pakistan would work together with the international community to tackle global challenges.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has also congratulated the nation. Sharing his congratulatory message on X, Ishaq Dar said: “My heartiest congratulations to the nation on Pakistan's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2025-26 with an overwhelming support of 182 votes”.
Dar said Pakistan looks forward to maintaining its commitment to the vision of the UN Charter. He said the vision of the United Nations Charter included the prevention of war, the promotion of peace and global prosperity and the promotion of universal respect for human rights.
