Much of reconstruction work in 2005 earthquake-hit areas yet to begin

Despite the passage of 18 years, work on 811 projects of reconstruction in the areas devastated by the October 8, 2005 earthquake is yet to get underway while 919 projects could not be completed due to paucity of funds, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
According to the official statistics, after April 2021, the government of Pakistan did not release funds for the reconstruction of the affected areas.
As many as 0.2 million children in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) still study out in the open due to the government’s failure to rebuild buildings of their schools.
The documents reveal that 515 educational institutions have been partially rebuilt while work on 597 others is yet to begin.
Similarly, Rs51 billion are required for the completion of different projects.
Furthermore, as per the official figures, out of total 7,608 projects, 5,878 have been completed.
On the other hand, according to Secretary State Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Agency (SERA) Javedul Hassan, reconstruction of 20 hospitals and health centers has not got underway yet, while 21 others are incomplete.
