Police used baton-charge and tear-gas shelling to disperse protesting Workers Welfare Board employees in Peshawar, 24NewsHD TV channel reported Tuesday.
The officials took to the streets to mount pressure on the government to press for their demands. The demonstrators blocked Khyber Road against the authorities for turning a deaf ear to their voice for rights.
Police used force and left the protesters injured as the lawmen were called in to unblock the road. The source said some demonstrators were detained while the workers called an emergency meeting to devise a future line of action.
Federal Minister Shazia Murree condemned the use of force to disperse the peaceful demonstrators.
She said the police brutality exposed Imran Khan’s team. The KP chief minister is following in the footsteps of the former prime minister, she said, adding that women workers were too subjected to violence.
The protesters have been on protest for job security, saying that the KP authorities have not been abiding by the decision of the Supreme Court for regularization. More than 3,000 men and women workers have been crying for job regularization.
