Allama Iqbal Medical College Principal Prof Syed Asghar Naqi has said the college's graduates are excelling worldwide.


In an exclusive talk with 24NewsHD, he reiterated his resolve to strive for intellectual growth, clinical skills, and the instillation of empathy in medical students. He reaffirmed his commitment to direct all-out energies to deliver standardized and quality education and produce proficient healthcare professionals.


Although the AIMC stood second merit-list-wise in Punjab, facilities-wise it is number one, Prof Naqi said while sharing the college feats and programmes it has been offering.


He added: “If you look at its design it spans 104 acres of land. In addition to all the basic departments, we have an excellent library, all types of playgrounds and an Olympic-level swimming pool and gymnasium. We have games and all the facilities that any good educational institution should have.”


Prof Asghar Naqi, son of a renowned journalist Hussain Naqi joined the AIMC as principal on May 2, 2024, and affirmed his resolve to take the AIMC to new heights, saying “The college is among the top five medical institutes of the country while our physicians in North America are working on getting our fresh graduates trained there.”


This year 34 students were offered residencies in the US, he disclosed as he shed light on improving the college ranking globally.


“In the UK, Australia, and wherever quality training is being provided, our graduates are going to avail it.”  


He said the work on developing the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology at the Jinnah Hospital is afoot.


The AIMC has been producing doctors since May 2, 1975. Initially, the Services Hospital was affiliated with the college till 1990 when it moved to its present campus. Since then, it has been affiliated with the Jinnah Hospital.


The 250-bed Jinnah Institute of Cardiology will help cater to the needs of hundreds of cardiac patients – one of the emerging challenges confronting healthcare providers, Prof Naqi averred.


Born in 1968, he graduated from the King Edward Medical College Lahore in 1993. He did his FCPS from the College of Physician and Surgeon Pakistan in 1998 and FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburg in 2000.


He completed his MCPS in Health Professions Education from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan in 2013. 


In 2020, he got his FACS degree from the American College of Surgeons.


He was also awarded with HEC Best University Teacher award in 2022.


" Besides imparting medical education in multiple moots at national and international levels, he delivered more than 70 keynote lectures and presentations.


Prof Naqi joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore, as a senior registrar of general surgery in 1998 and eventually rose to professor of general surgery at DG Khan Medical College in 2013.  Since 2015, he served in various vital positions.


His clinical research interest led to the publication of 93 papers in national and international journals. He got more than 20 national and international awards plus hundreds of commemorative shields and certificates.
