Famous singer Shahzad Roy has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court against the violence and corporal punishment of schoolchildren.

The petition reads that corporal punishment of the children at schools, both public and private, has become a routine matter.

The petition further said that this is against the fundamental human rights and a violation of the UN Article 89 regarding children.

The singer also sought a ban on the corporal punishment to the children in various places including schools, jails, at workplace or rehabilitation centres.

The petition further requested the court to direct the government to take necessary actions to safeguard the children from physical and mental violence.

Shahzad Roy’s petition also included the interior secretary, law secretary, education secretary, and the secretary for human rights as respondents. Inspector General Police Islamabad was also made respondent in this petition.
