10 of a family burnt alive as their house catches fire in Lahore

Ten members of a same family including 6 children, two women, one man were burnt to death in a fire in a house in Bhati Gate, Lahore last night, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.

The fire broke out in a three-storey house rented by Zaheeruddin Babar located in Noor Mohalla. As the fire started engulfing all three stories, the family members locked themselves in the back room of the house.

However, one of the sons of Zaheeruddin, Zohaib, jumped from the upper storey of the house and saved himself.

Punjab Chief Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi expressed deep grief over the death of 10 members of a family in the fire. He condoled the heart-wrenching deaths with the heirs of the ill-fated family, saying that he equally shared their grief.

He ordered the Lahore division commissioner to hold an inquiry into this tragic incident and sought report.

Rescue sources said that the family of Zaheeruddin Babar was living in the house.

Among those who died of burns were included: Zaheer’s one son, one daughter, daughter-in-law, and his grandchildren.

The deceased were identified as: 60-year-old Saira Bano w/o Zaheeruddin, Farana (daughter), 13-year-old Seemab, 18-year-old Sania, 13-year-old Mono, 16-year-old Adil, and 4-year-old Anzal Fatima s/o Waris Ali.

The dead bodies have been shifted to the mortuary by the rescue team, while the rescue operation has also been completed.

Zohaib who saved himself after jumping from the upper sotrey informed that the children told the elders about burning smell in the house. When he opened the door of the store room in the house, the whole house was filled with smoke. He said all the members of the house locked themselves in the back room. He said he didn’t stay there and jumped from the upper storey and woke up his neighbours for help. He said within no time, the fire gutted the entire house.

He said he was at a loss to understand how the fire broke out.

He informed that his father had rented the house but the family was about to move to another place in Nishtar Colony.

The brother of Zaheeruddin said that his brother luckily escaped the tragedy as had gone to Nishtar Colony last night.
