Defence Minister Kh Asif came down hard on Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub over the latter’s remarks about applying Article 6 to the violators of the constitution, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Monday.

As Omar said high treason (Article 6) should be applied to violation of the constitution, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that Ayub Khan committed the ‘first violation of the constitution’.

He added: “Ayub Khan overthrew the democratic government.

“Applying Article 6 should begin with the fake field marshal Ayub Khan.

“The body of Ayub Khan should be taken out of the grave and hanged.

“Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri also broke the constitution. Apply Article 6 on them too.”

As opposition members kept making commotion during the speech of the defence minister, he said the opposition was perturbed as ‘it should be’.

He continued: “We admit we were with Gen Zia and we apologised.

“These people do not even remember where they were. They are so afraid that they come to the House in lawyer’s uniforms.

“Their American plot narrative is now replaced by the London Plan. To date, they have not decided who will be the PAC Chairman.

Ayub’s remarks came days after ISPR DG Ahmed Shareef Chaudhry said that the perpetrators and facilitators of the May 9 riots need to be punished according to the constitution and the law of the land to preserve credibility and faith in the country’s justice system.

The issue of the May 9 riots is not limited to the Pakistan Army but concerns the whole nation," he said, urging those involved in the May 9 violent protests to apologise and shun politics of anarchy before holding any dialogue.
