The High Education Commission (HEC) has issued a notification letting pharmacists and physiotherapists write 'Dr' as the prefix of their names, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.
The commission declared the notification of the University of Health Sciences illegal, which barred pharmacist and physiotherapists from writing Dr with their names.
The pharmacists and physiotherapists can use the word doctor with their name, the HEC notified, adding that the pharmacists can also write Pharma D and Physiotherapist DPT with their name.
Reportedly, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) recommended refraining physiotherapy and pharmacy practitioners from write Dr with their names .
The council made a request to the ministry of health services to bar physiotherapists and pharmacists from billing themselves as doctors.
Physiotherapists and pharmacists associations, however, rejected the PMDC recommendation saying the council has no authority over them.
