British High Commission and Pakistan to collaborate on power sector reforms

The British High Commission and the Government of Pakistan have committed to working together for the improvement of the Power Division, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.
Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Leghari met with Jo Moir, Development Director of the British High Commission, in Islamabad. During the meeting, the Minister provided a comprehensive review of reforms undertaken in the Power Division.

Economic Importance of Energy Sector: Jo Moir emphasized the energy sector’s pivotal role in economic success and stability.
Better Governance in Energy: She stated that energy is a governance issue and pledged support for enhancing governance in Pakistan’s energy sector.
Clean Energy Progress: The Federal Minister highlighted that 55% of Pakistan's energy is derived from clean energy sources.
Initiatives Discussed:
Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy:
The government plans to introduce an EV policy aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable for low-income groups.
Development partners are expected to play a vital role in ensuring affordable and efficient electric vehicles.
Plans include establishing charging stations and battery replacement hubs powered by cost-effective electricity.
Privatisation of Distribution Companies:
The minister announced that the government would stop purchasing electricity in the future.
Development partners were invited to provide technical support for the privatisation process of power distribution companies.
British High Commission’s Commitment:
Jo Moir assured that the British High Commission would support reforms in Pakistan's energy sector and provide all possible assistance.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to working collaboratively for the betterment of the Power Division.
