Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Ayesha Malik said on Saturday that there was a need to take effective steps for the protection of the rights of animals in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Addressing a conference in Lahore, she said it was heartening to note that different organizations were working in the country for the welfare of animals. “And more needs to be done. Because just like there are human rights, there are animal rights as well.”
Justice Ayesha also stressed the need for enacting laws to give tough penalties to those who tortured animals and committed brutalities against them.
She recalled that when she was the Lahore High Court (LHC) judge, a petition concerning the killings of dogs was filed for the hearing.
