Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Apex Committee on Friday decided to demolish all bunkers set up by warring tribes in the Kurram district in an attempt to restore peace in the region, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The vital decision was made during the high-level Apex Committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Peshawar Corps Commander, KP chief secretary, IGP and key cabinet members.

Tribal clashes have so far killed more than 200 people since July. The peace efforts continue, as the elders from the two sides were negotiating the terms for lasting peace in the area.

In order to quell the violence, the KP government has shut down key roads in and out of the district to check the violence after a security escort travelling along residents was ambushed in November, resulting in deaths of 40 travellers.

During Friday’s meeting in Peshawar, the participants of the Apex Committee were briefed on the peace initiatives and the progress of the grand jirga. The committee mulled strategies to prevent future unrest, emphasizing the need for disarmament alongside the removal of private bunkers.

Interior Minister Naqvi assured the committee of full support from the Federation, saying ensuring peace in Kurram is a top priority. He also pledged to enhance the capabilities of law-enforcement agencies in the province.

The committee recognized the importance of continued dialogue with local residents to facilitate the return of weapons.

“Lasting peace is not possible without the eradication of bunkers and weapons,” said a statement released after the Apex Committee meeting.

Naqvi-Gandapur meeting

Federal Minister for Interior Affairs Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi assured Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of full support for ensuring peace in the province.

Mohsin Naqvi emphasised that law enforcement agencies in KP would be provided with all necessary support to enhance their capabilities.

On Friday, Mohsin Naqvi visited the Chief Minister's Office in Peshawar, where he was warmly received by Ali Amin Gandapur.

During their meeting, both leaders discussed the law and order situation in the province and measures to establish lasting peace in the Kurram district.

Mohsin Naqvi stated that ensuring peace in Kurram remains a top priority and stressed the need for consultation with stakeholders to take sustainable steps for maintaining harmony in the region.

Both leaders paid tribute to the martyrs of the war on terror, with Naqvi acknowledging their invaluable sacrifices.

Mohsin Naqvi remarked, "The martyrs are a source of pride for us, and we salute their eternal sacrifices."
